The start of employment law can really be traced back to the 1970’s with the start of the discrimination legislation, until then employment contracts were purely an emanation of contract law and what appeared fair or just did not come into the equation. Since then there has been a plethora of legislation regulating the relationships between employee and employer and now the subject is very specialised.
Employment law disputes are heard in the Employment Tribunal before an employment Judge and in some types of cases before an employment Judge and two lay representatives (therefore a panel of three).
